What is the Difference Between Goose Down and Duck Down?

Goose down or duck down, which is better?

When comparing goose down and duck down of similar quality, i.e. the same fill power (loft), there is little physical difference between the two. They both provide similar levels of insulation and maintain their loft and warmth for years when properly cared for. However, there are still a couple of differences to consider.

Understanding the scent profile

One difference that can affect the user experience is the natural scent of the material. Duck down is inherently more odorous than goose down. While professional cleaning and sanitizing processes remove the vast majority of this scent, individuals with a very acute sense of smell may notice a difference. For most sleepers, however, the scent is not detectable.

Availability of high-end loft

The second major difference lies in the availability of high fill power. To achieve a high loft (typically above 750), a product requires a high percentage of large down clusters, known as plumules.

Because geese are physically larger than ducks, they produce the larger clusters necessary for high-end insulation at scale. This makes goose down the primary source for premium, high-loft products. While you can find high-grade duck down and lower-grade goose down, goose down clusters are, on average, larger and loftier.

Our collection at Linens Delight

We offer a curated selection of both materials to suit different preferences and budgets:

  • White Duck Down: Our collection ranges from 650 to 800 loft, representing the highest quality achievable for duck down.

  • White Goose Down: Our goose down ranges from 600 to 950 loft, offering the largest clusters for maximum warmth and luxury.

How to choose the right fit

Because variations in specifications like fill power and weight significantly impact price and comfort, transparency is essential. Before deciding your next set of bedding, we recommend using our expert resources to ensure an "apple-to-apple" comparison:
