Understanding fill power and fill weight
When selecting premium down products, the two most important parameters to consider are fill power and fill weight. Although they are often confused, they represent two separate and distinct aspects of bedding performance.
What is fill weight?
Fill weight refers to the physical quantity of down (measured in ounces) inside the shell of your duvet or pillow. To make your selection easier, we categorize our products based on the specific comfort they provide:
-
Duvets: Categorized into Summer, All-Season, and Winter weights to reflect their warmth.
-
Pillows: Categorized into Soft, Medium, and Firm to reflect their support levels.
What is fill power (Loft)?
Fill power is a scientific measurement of the space one ounce of down occupies in cubic inches. Often referred to as "loft," it is the primary indicator of down quality and fluffiness.
Typically ranging from 500 to 1,000, a higher number indicates larger down clusters that trap more air. At Linens Delight, our collection represents the pinnacle of natural insulation:
-
White Duck Down (WD): We offer premium duck down reaching up to 800 loft, which is the highest quality achievable for this material.
-
White Goose Down (GD): For those seeking maximum insulation, our goose down products range up to 950 loft, representing the highest grade of goose down available.

The image below show the fluffy quality of our down at various fill power grades. The down in each cylinder weights equally at 2 grams, the volume of the high loft down demonstrates the superior compressibility and insulating property.
The visual difference in loft is significant. If you were to compare equal weights of different fill powers, the higher loft down would occupy much more volume, demonstrating its superior compressibility and insulating properties.
High fill power is attributed to larger down clusters. As discussed in the “Down vs Feather” section, since goose down clusters are generally larger and loftier, high fill power down (usually >750 loft) tends to be goose down. The duck down products we offer range from 650 loft to 800 loft and the goose down products range from 600 loft to 950 loft.
Is higher fill power always better?
A high loft reflects superior quality and a higher warmth-to-weight ratio, but the "best" choice depends on your specific environment. While a 950 loft duvet offers incredible warmth without weight, a mid-range loft may be more suitable for warmer climates or climate-controlled bedrooms. We provide clear specifications for every product to ensure you can make an informed decision based on your personal needs.
Additional quality markers
Beyond the down itself, pay attention to the construction details that preserve its performance:
-
Fabric Material: The quality of the shell affects breathability and down-proofness.
-
Baffle Box Design: This internal wall structure minimizes the shifting of down to prevent cold spots.
-
Functional Details: Features like corner ties ensure your duvet stays secure inside its cover.
How to choose the right fit
Because variations in specifications like fill power and weight significantly impact price and comfort, transparency is essential. Before deciding where to buy your next set of bedding, we recommend using our expert resources to ensure an "apple-to-apple" comparison:
